Jazz with Alice (and Sam) class block
Alice Roberts will be teaching at the Melbourne weekend event Aussie Girl Jam, so we're taking advantage of all her class preparation.
You've learnt that break bit from the Big Apple, but can you lead or follow it with a partner? You WILL.
How's your visual learning going? Can you see a rhythm, recognise it, retain it, then reproduce it? All in 2 bar chunks? No worries: we will MASTER this. In week 1 of our beginner block.
Can you improvise and create new rhythmic sequences and steps on the spot? Not a problem: week 3 in beginner classes.
So what's happening in the intermediate/extender classes?
Same, but more, and harder.
- Week 1 (28 Feb): Jazz In Lindy Hop
- We steal (respectfully) from Norma Miller and Frankie Manning.
Sure, you know how to shimmy, but can you make it look cool?
You've learnt that break bit from the Big Apple, but can you lead or follow it with a partner?
- You've got a promenade under your belt. Excellent. Now let's get fancy with this closed position. And add some tricky jazz steps.
- Alice teaches classes she's planned for Girl Jam. And we get our learn on.
- Our goal: at least one new jazz step every single class. Probably more.
- How does jazz work? What is swung timing?
Closed position, gliding, and leading and following.
Then put some jazz in that.
Total beginners welcome.
- SWING OUT. In one hour, you'll be swinging out, nailing rhythm steps, comfortable in closed position, and you'll put some jazz in that.
- Improvise. You, a partner, creating your own rhythms, working with a partner to make jazz. Turns, swing outs, and JAZZ.
- Some old school steps, fresh jazz steps, and we put those swing outs to WORK.
- More old school steps, fresh jazz, and more steps.
