DJ workshop and SESSion with Sam Carroll
A Talk-and-Try workshop on DJing for dancers.
Bring your questions and topics for discussion - we'll let them structure our session.
Everyone is welcome, whether you're a brand new DJ, an experienced DJ, or just want to come and have a look. Kids and teens are also welcome. Musicians are especially welcome.
And EVERYONE is welcome at the social dancing SESSh afterwards - come be our guinea pigs!
1) DJ WORKSHOP IN 2 PARTS
TALK:
A casual (yet guided) talk about DJing for swing dancers (lindy hoppers, balboa dancers, solo jazzers, shaggers, and even blues dancers 😃).
Some topics:
- how to get started in DJing
- how to get bigger gigs interstate and overseas
- DJ bios and photos: putting a PR pack together
- DJing is improvised: how to put a set together on the fly
- being a pro: how to talk to organisers and get gigs
TRY:
We'll get a pile of sound gear and set it up for a gig.
- no experience necessary
- we'll work in small teams (of 2 or 3)
- using real sound gear
2) PRACTICE SESSION (SOCIAL DANCE)
We'll DJ a little social dance for our friends, learning how to combine songs in real time, and how to handle sound gear.
- dealing with mistakes and problems without stress
- learning to read a crowd
- using your tech.

Note: we will be dealing with electricity, and handling gear, and you will be responsible for your own body and safety. No unaccompanied minors, please.
